March General Member Meeting

March General Member Meeting: Chemistry Building A120, 8:00pm

We will be kicking off the new induction year with an overview of the organization and information on some of the upcoming events such as Flowerfest and Paint Night. We will also be giving out prizes to members with the highest point counts for the last year. As always, T-shirts will be sold for 10$ so make sure to get one!  Do not forget to bring winter apparel to the meeting for points (you can receive 5 points for each donation and receive a max of 10 points). The clothing will be donated to Windham Region No Freeze Hospitality Center on behalf of the 2017 UConn Nursing Class. Pizza will also be served so don’t miss out! Critical Language Scholarship Program = = This program is a fully funded language and cultural immersion course sponsored by the US Department of State. Applicants are given an amazing opportunity to broaden their cultural horizons by immersing themselves in languages like Azerbaijani, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic, Russian, and Chinese – Due November 23, 2015 @ 8 PM EST


CashCourse “My Story” Scholarship = = CashCourse is an organization that promotes financial independence. Applicants are asked to share their stories of what financial independence means to them, by explaining choices or experiences that have changed their lives or view on finance. The grand prize winner will be awarded $1,500, but there will also be a second place winner and 4 runner ups who will also win smaller scholarships. – Due by Nov. 30, 2015


Secret Mean Stinks Scholarships = = Mean Stinks is an organization dedicated ending of girl-to-girl bullying by encouraging schools and people to share their stories of kind acts instead of cyberbullying. Applicants are asked to share a story of a kind act they’ve done or experienced and how that’s changed their life to add to #ChainofNice. Three winners will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship. – Due December 14, 2015 @ 5 PM EST

ALD UColor Winner!


Thank you to ALD member Kathleen Flynn for taking the time to represent ALD through your art!  Kathleen entered an art competition hosted by UConn’s Bean Team for Homecoming Weekend and WON.  Kathleen was able to convey what ALD is all about: Leadership, Service, and Excellence.  Saying your work is amazing is an understatement. Congrats!

11/10 ALD November General Member Meeting

ALD will be hosting our November General Member Meeting in the Family Studies Building in room 103 at 8:00pm on Tuesday, November 10th. We will be discussing our next event, the Create-a-Snack Competition as well as other interesting opportunities such as our academic scholarships.  At this meeting we will also be hosting a can food drive that will go to Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic. Members will get points for each can brought and be able to support the less fortunate.Also do not miss out on ALD’s recap of October! See all Alpha Lambda Delta members soon!

October Academic Opportunities

Mahogany & Blues Babe Foundation Scholarship = = Mahogany and Blues Babe Foundation have teamed up with Hallmark to establish a scholarship for students pursuing any degrees in the writing arts. Two $10,000 awards will be given to two winners who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership qualities, and involvement in the community. The winners will also be invited to attend a three day workshop at Hallmark’s HQ in Kansas City. – Due Oct. 30


Alma Exley Scholarship = = Alma Exley dedicated her life to bringing more people of color into the teaching profession. This scholarship was made in her honor to carry on her cause. A $5,000 scholarship will awarded to a student of color in their junior or senior year who demonstrates commitment to the teaching program they are enrolled in. – Due Oct. 31


Thermo Fisher Scientific Antibody Scholarship Award = = Thermo Fisher Scientific is interested in supporting the careers of new scientists. Applications are open to undergrad and grad students enrolled in science majors, like biology and chemistry. A committee will select 6 winners, awarding two $10,000 scholarships and four $5,000 scholarships – Due Nov. 24 by midnight

ALD Linkedin Workshop

We are considered the Internet generation, so it’s no surprise that now as we venture out into the working world, our interviewers are curious about what we have put on the Internet. This could be as simple as a Googling of our name, or as in-depth as a search of our social media accounts. So how do you avoid your future boss digging up that embarrassing picture? Come join us at the LinkedIn Workshop to find out after the general member meeting on October 13th in RM 103 of the Family Studies Building.


Scholarship Opportunity: College JumpStart Scholarship

Fill out an application and submit a personal statement of 250 words to win a scholarship of $1,000.  This scholarship application is due by October 17th, 2015.  The application is great because it is simple and the scholarship would be perfect to apply to a study abroad program or a semester of books and school supplies.

10/13 October General Member Meeting

ALD will be hosting a general member meeting on October 13th at 8pm in the Family Studies Building Room 103.

The general member meeting will take the time to explain more about the fall events that are happening the following week such as PumpkinFest 2015 and the Halloween Game Night.

Support Pi Beta Phi’s ArrowSpike 2K15

Pi Beta Phi will be hosting their annual philanthropy event, ArrowSpike, on October 10th at 11:00 AM! ArrowSpike is a 6 v. 6 volleyball tournament to benefit Read>Lead>Achieve, Pi Beta Phi’s philanthropic effort, which inspires a lifelong love of reading that can unlock true potential creating a more literate and productive society.

The event will be held at Husky Village and sign-in will be at 10:30 AM for all of the teams. Teams are made up of at least 6 players, with a max of 2 additional substitutes (8 team members total).

ALD hope all our members had a great summer! But we are glad to have you back in Husky Nation.  Therefore, ALD is hosting an ice cream social in the Student Union Lobby to welcome back everyone properly. The event will be free for all members of ALD, so come on down from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, enjoy some delicious DAIRY BAR ice cream, and hang out with your fellow ALDers!
